The Arts West Building in Melbourne recently took out the prestigious 2018 Global Galvanizing Awards, chosen from a field of 36 projects from 13 different countries.

Presented by the European General Galvanizers Association (EGGA) every three years, the Global Galvanizing Award is awarded for outstanding hot-dip galvanized steel architecture.

Arts West Building, University Of Melbourne

The distinctive Faculty of Arts building was part of a significant infrastructure project for the University of Melbourne costing $66 million dollars and is best known for its stunning facade:

“Arts West’s distinctive façade involves the ground-breaking and extremely innovative use of steel. The façade features images of selected objects from the University’s 23 cultural collections. Hence, the façade is both a passive solar-control element and an architectural manifestation of the Faculty of Arts’ pedagogical aspirations.”

Other interesting facts about this fascinating building:

• The 3D images change depending on the time of day and the viewpoint.
• 480 individual steel sections were coated in Zinc by Valmont Coatings and then delivered to the University of Melbourne construction site.
• Each batch of galvanized steel louvres took an average of two to three working days to turnaround in the plant.
